Moonroof vs Sunroof – What’s The Difference? [Updated for 2023]

(Moonroof vs Sunroof) The main difference is that the moonroof is made of transparent glass, whereas the sunroof is made of a solid body-colored panel. The moonroof goes all the way back to the passenger area. The Sunroof is placed above the driver’s area of the car.

Roof openings are one of the most recent automotive innovations. Car manufacturers began to incorporate this new feature into each model. But when it comes to talking about the roof of a car, people often confuse a sunroof with a moonroof. Despite the fact that both roof panels serve the same function.

A Comprehensive Guide to Moonroof vs Sunroof- [Key Differences]

A Comprehensive Guide to Moonroof Vs Sunroof- Key Differences

1. Size

Moon roofs are longer in size, and in contrast, sunroofs are smaller or shorter. They are different in size because of their use. The moonroof will allow you to get limited light and air into the vehicle’s cabin, whereas the sunroof will enable you to enjoy more air or light than the moonroof.

2. Design

They are designed differently to mount in different locations. Moonroofs are mounted on the roof of the vehicle, and they are generally pop-up panels.

Meanwhile, the Sunroofs are mounted in different locations on the top/roof. Sunroofs have various designs such as pop-up retractable or tilt-slide.

3. Opening Mechanism:

The moonroof generally opens up with a pop-up or a tilt mechanism. Rather, the sunroof opens with a sliding mechanism.

Note: In sunroofs a movable panel allows air to enter the passenger compartment.

4. Installation

The Sunroof is easier to install than the moonroof. Install it on the roof and operate it manually.

In Reverse, the Moonroof needs proper mounting with an electric motor.

5. Weight

The Sunroof is larger and carries more weight than the moonroof. However, the Moonroof easily connects with a small electric motor for operation.

6. Water sealing

A sunroof is not intended to be waterproof because it lacks a water-seal feature.

It may leak in heavy rain. But the moonroof has a watertight seal to prevent water from entering the vehicle in heavy rain. The moonroof is better in terms of water resistance than the sunroof.

7. Cost

Sunroof panels are more expensive than moonroof panels. The cost difference between a sunroof and a moonroof can vary depending on several factors, such as size, material or brand.

On average, you may pay between 500 and 2000 dollars for a moonroof. At the same time, the average cost of a sunroof may be between 1,000 and 3,000 dollars.

My Opinion- ( Moonroof VS Sunroof Which one is better)

Moonroof and Sunroof are excellent roof panels, but each has advantages and disadvantages that make them suitable for different situations.

Sunroofs are better choices if you are on a reasonable budget and want an easy operation, more air, and light. But it has some drawbacks, such as low security, more noise, and less water resistance.

On the other hand, the moonroof is affordable, water-resistant, and ensures fresh light and air. However it is complex to install and cannot be removed from the roof.

Why is a Moonroof Not Called a Sunroof?

Why is a Moonroof Not Called a Sunroof

A moonroof is also a type of sunroof, but it is designed to allow a view of the moon and stars at night, not only the sun during the day. So it is called the “moonroof” instead of the “sunroof.”

Another fact is its smaller size, which is not designed for as much air or light as we need during the day. As a result, it is only for fresh air or a little light, hence the term “moonroof.”  Automobile Roof

Why do People Love Moonroofs?

Moonroofs are small, beautifully designed panels that make them perfect for several conditions. People appreciate the moonroof because of its benefits, which include allowing fresh air, providing a beautiful night view, having a versatile style, and being simple to use.

Can the Moonroof be Opened?

Moonroofs are similar to sunroofs but are smaller. You can open them, but unlike a sunroof, the moonroof cannot be fully opened. A sunroof can be removed from the roof, but the moonroof remains attached.

What is the Disadvantage of a Sunroof in Cars?

A sunroof has excellent features, but you still face some risks that make it the worst choice. Below are some disadvantages of a sunroof in a car:

  • It is noisier than the moonroof.
  • The sunroof is less water-resistant and may leak in heavy rain.
  • It is easy for criminals to break
  • Sunroofs are costly.
